Some time ago, I traveled to Ladakh for an assignment and unexpectedly met Sonam, a Tibetan refugee. A woman with a remarkable story and a powerful, slightly philosophical outlook on life. During our time together, she shared how, at just eight years old, she left her family, believing she was going on a vacation with her older sister—only to later be left behind when her sister entered a monastery. She also spoke of the Tibetan Buddhist lessons that shaped her, the most profound being: home is not a place, but a feeling you carry within you. Today, she leads women on journeys through India under Loving Tara, honoring the women who once gave her the strength to move forward. Sonam’s story is one of resilience, inspiration, and the power of mindset in finding the way back to happiness.
